Member Of The Month – September 2017

September Member Of The Month 2017Tell us a little bit about  yourself? (family, where you are from, etc)

I was born in the City of Angels and share the same birthday as Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols. Most of my life thus far has been spent between Naperville and the Windy City. My alma mater is the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) where I majored in printmaking (etching, woodcut, lithography) and served the community as a Resident Advisor and Senior Resident Advisor / Health and Wellness Committee Leader. Currently, I’m my mom’s right hand man at our rapidly growing family business and online boutique, Aprils2ndcloset. One of my Nana’s favorite quotes by Confucius that I live by goes, “he who says he can and he who says he can’t are both usually right.”

How did you get started in CrossFit?

My mom convinced me to start CrossFit. I’ve never considered myself an athlete… let alone athletic. Growing up I was only involved in Taekwondo and recreational soccer for a very short time in middle school. During my high school years I dreaded P.E. and always opted for the least competitive and physically demanding class (dance of the decades, yoga and pilates, etc.). In college I was semi-serious about working out, but it never fully took off. It wasn’t until this past year that physical fitness has become such an integral part of my life. Starting this journey from the near beginning without much formal training has been challenging, humbling and rewarding.

What are your favorite movements to do during a WOD?

Right now my favorite movements are any of the olympic or powerlifts. They’re such simple movements on paper, but extraordinarily technical when executed. It excites me knowing that it takes years or even a lifetime to master the lifts.

What do you love best about CrossFit?

I really love the interdisciplinary nature of CrossFit. There’s so many different sports and fitness philosophies channeling into CrossFit that makes it so appealing. I feel like I’m always challenged to learn more about the many different branches and set higher standards each and every day.

When you’re not in the gym busting your butt, what is your favorite things to do?

My favorite activity outside of the box is being in nature. I love to hike, backpack, camp and kayak whenever the opportunity arises. Add a beautiful scenic destination like Colorado, Maui or Iceland to the mix and I’m over the Moon ecstatic. However, some of my greatest moments with nature have been in our Chicagoland backyard with my family’s rescue fur baby, Baxter.

Tell us something that most people don’t know about yourself?

***Guilty Pleasure Alert*** During the holidays I enjoy watching the Hallmark Channel.
